Catholic tradition includes specific prayers and devotions as Acts of Reparation for insults and blasphemies against Jesus Christ and the Holy Name of Jesus. These include the sufferings during the Passion of Jesus.
The acts of reparation to Jesus Christ prayers are recited with the intention to repair the sins of others, for example taking the name of Jesus Christ in vain, for blasphemy or the insults said against Jesus and for his sufferings at his crucifixion at Calvary.
Specific Roman Catholic organizations exist for the purpose of acts of reparation to Jesus Christ. The Archconfraternity of Reparation for blasphemy and the neglect of Sunday was founded in 1847 and the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face was founded in 1851 by the Venerable Leo Dupont. In 1950, the Venerable Abbot Hildebrand Gregori formed the organization ‘Prayerful Sodality’ now the Pontifical Congregation of the Benedictine Sisters of the Reparation of the Holy Face.
Apparitions and reparations: overview
The need for acts of reparation to Jesus Christ has been emphasised within messages reported as part of apparitions seen of the Virgin Mary, Holy Mother of Jesus. In 1973, the apparition of Our Lady of Akita in 1973 is reported to have given the following message: “Many men in this world afflict the Lord. I desire souls to console Him to soften the anger of the Heavenly Father.”
The need for prayers of repentance, reparation and penance were also emphasized in the reported messages of Our Lady of Kibeho in 1982.
Rosary of the Holy Wounds: overview
The Rosary of the Holy Wounds is a Rosary based prayer primarily directed at the sufferings of Jesus Christ and does not include the usual mysteries of the rosary. Considered another of the acts of reparation to Jesus Christ, it was first presented by the Venerable Sister Marie Martha Chambon from France who reported that Jesus Christ appeared to her, asking her to unite her sufferings with His as an Act of Reparation for the sins of the world.
Prayer of reparation for insults and blasphemies: overview
There are several prayers that may be used as acts of reparation to Jesus Christ. The Golden Arrow Prayer by Sister Marie of St Peter was written after her visions of Jesus where she was told that an act of sacrilege or blasphemy is like a ‘poisoned arrow’, giving the prayer its title.
